First Generation College Student

In my family I consider myself to be a first generation college student. My sister went to college for about two semesters and then stopped because she got a well-paying job. My sister got lucky and I knew that if I wanted to become successful college was first and foremost in achieving that. Considering my sister did not really go to college that long; I usually am considered amongst my family as the first to go to college and I love it. My mom always put a lot of emphasis on me going to college and getting a good education but that was not always the case with my dad. He is a very traditional man and believes that since he did not go to college and just got a job right away I should do the same. He thought that why waste money on time on college when some college graduates are still not even able to find jobs. Why not just get a job out of high school and spend the time I would spend in college trying to work my way up in the company. He had a point, but there was no way I was going to not go to college; especially when baseball gave me the opportunity to go to college without having to pay for tuition or books. Once that option was available there were no arguments from my parents and they were extremely excited with me going off to college and being the first in my family to get my degree.

  1. Wow! thats awesome I am glad baseball gave you the opportunity to achieve your goals. It is already hard enough to be a first generation college student it must be harder when your parent is not giving you the support you sought for. I am glad that your parents support you now. I wish you the best of luck this season with baseball and am looking forward to reading more of your blogs. Hopefully you inform us on how AWESOME your team is going to be doing this year.

  2. I think it is great that you didn't care what your dad said and still went for it. Different generations have different views. That is always a tough situation if you get a well paying job. Hard to pass that up. I commend you for taking this path.

  3. Haha, if you're in a Asian family, this will be a total different story with the parents. A lot of them have this thought that since they didn't have the chance to go to college or achieve higher education, their children must fulfill that empty space! (Yet many parents claim that they're doing this for the children....)

  4. I really like your post! I am really glad that you decided to step up and go to college to really further your education in hopes of getting a high paying job. It takes a lot of courage and determination to break the chain of non-college family members. That's really awesome and I hope you get a job that will benefit all your hard work. Good luck!
