My Central Comm. Struggles
Throughout my last two years of taking Communication classes I have found out a lot about myself. I have come to realize that I tend to be nervous when speaking personally with others, or presenting a project. But, I also noticed that a huge part of presenting is knowing what I'm talking about and having strong feelings to support it. I realize that when I am well prepared for a topic and know all the back ground info I am not nervous to present. I am confident with what I have to say and I am able to say it with a purpose. That is why when I present topics I make sure to choose wisely. I know that if Im just talking to get the grade then I really wont do well, but if I really talk about something I care about and support then I will not be nervous and I'll be able to do a good job. This is only the fourth communication class that I have been able to take, but I feel as if my public speaking is improving with each class.

Good for you, it is better to choose a topic you feel strongly about because then you are not just rambling off you are stating things that you researched. Public speaking is hard for me as well and I have taken several communication classes, but like you I have come to realize when I am well prepared I perform better. Also, like you I struggled with interpersonal communication, but once you feel comfortable with your speaking skills then you are able to strive. Good luck with comm.
ReplyDeleteDJ,
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is hard to be invested in a topic you don't feel strongly about. It can certainly make our performance as a speaker sub par because we haven't really put in enough time to generate the amount of information we need to feel confident in our words. That's a really good point that I think a lot of people know, but don't really consider when making topic selections. I hope that you continue to improve yourself and don't give up on braving the world of public speaking!
I definitely agree. It is hard to speak about something you aren't passionate about. You most likely don't know much information about it if you don't care which makes it harder. I always do better on my speech's when I have an interesting topic. In my oral comm class back home at my community college I picked some pretty wacky topics to present since it was less about the topic and more about the presentation skills. It made it way easier.
ReplyDeleteI totally understand your point of view. I think this presenting issue is even for as a foreign student such as me, because it's hard enough to present something in a language that you're familiar of; it's even worse if you don't have any passion on your assignments(topics). Which makes a lot of people struggled! Not just you. So I totally understand how you feel.
