In my family I consider myself to be a first generation
college student. My sister went to college for about two semesters and then
stopped because she got a well-paying job. My sister got lucky and I knew that
if I wanted to become successful college was first and foremost in achieving
that. Considering my sister did not really go to college that long; I usually
am considered amongst my family as the first to go to college and I love it. My
mom always put a lot of emphasis on me going to college and getting a good
education but that was not always the case with my dad. He is a very traditional
man and believes that since he did not go to college and just got a job right
away I should do the same. He thought that why waste money on time on college
when some college graduates are still not even able to find jobs. Why not just
get a job out of high school and spend the time I would spend in college trying
to work my way up in the company. He had a point, but there was no way I was
going to not go to college; especially when baseball gave me the opportunity to
go to college without having to pay for tuition or books. Once that option was available
there were no arguments from my parents and they were extremely excited with me
going off to college and being the first in my family to get my degree.

My Central Comm. Struggles
Throughout my last two years of taking Communication classes I have found out a lot about myself. I have come to realize that I tend to be nervous when speaking personally with others, or presenting a project. But, I also noticed that a huge part of presenting is knowing what I'm talking about and having strong feelings to support it. I realize that when I am well prepared for a topic and know all the back ground info I am not nervous to present. I am confident with what I have to say and I am able to say it with a purpose. That is why when I present topics I make sure to choose wisely. I know that if Im just talking to get the grade then I really wont do well, but if I really talk about something I care about and support then I will not be nervous and I'll be able to do a good job. This is only the fourth communication class that I have been able to take, but I feel as if my public speaking is improving with each class.
